The Essential Dog Training Package: A How-to Guide
Now that you have the right equipment for your training, what’s the best way to use it to get the most benefit for you and your pet? This guide was developed to help answer that question.
The 4-foot leash can be used for training. Your dog can wear the leash while in the house and when you call her to “Come” and she decides not to, you can grab the leash and bring her toward you. The leash is also useful in teaching your dog not to jump up on you or the furniture. Give a gentle, but firm, tug accompanied by the “Off” command.
Exercise is the best way to keep your dog calm and quiet; a tired dog is a good dog. Walking the dog using the No-Pull Harness helps insure that you are walking the dog and that the dog is not walking you. The harness moves pressure to the dog’s shoulders and chest rather than the neck and prevents you from choking the dog to get control. For even better control during your walks, the Head Halter calms and centers the dog and allows you to have maximum control. The Head Halter is not a muzzle. Using the Head Halter allows your dog to drink water and accept treats. The Head Halter is similar to the halter used on horses; the horse is able to eat and drink but the rider has control of the horse’s movement. Remember that the No Pull Harness and the Head Halter are for walks only. And to make the most of your walks, take your dogs’ favorite treats with you and reinforce training commands you have worked on at home.
While walking, keep the leash in your left hand and a treat in your right hand. Keeping the leash short, stop and call the dog’s name to get his attention. Raise the treat over his nose slowly with your palm turned up and say, “Sit.” As soon as you get a sit, give the treat and say “Good Sit.” Next, hold the treat between your thumb and forefinger, palm down, and bring your hand to the ground right in front of his nose and say, “Down.” When the dog is on his belly, give the treat and say, “Good Down.” Finally, hold the treat in your open hand and tell him, “Off.” When he stops being interested in the treat, you can say, “Take it” and give him the treat. If barking becomes a problem, either on your walks or when at home, and the “quiet” command is just not working, break out the Binaca. Just a quick spray on those doggie lips generally gets results. Just be sure of your aim . . . the mouth, not the eyes or nose. If you’re not sure, spray your fingers and then apply to the dog’s lips. And be sure to accompany the Binaca with the “Quiet” command.
When your walk is done and you’re back home, put the dog in his crate or use a tie down.
Dogs are den animals by nature and they like the security of being in their own crate. If crating is not possible, the 4-foot leash is the perfect way to establish a tie-down station to keep your dog within your sight. If your pet tries to chew on the leash, a little spritz of Bitter Apple will make the leash less desirable; and, giving a Bully Stick, Sterilized Stuffed Bone (stuffed with Jerky Treats) or Pressed Rawhide Stick will keep the dog appropriately occupied. Remember to take the dog out for a potty session before tying down or crating to prevent accidents. If an accident should happen, use Nature’s Miracle to clean the area. This will remove the scent so that your pet won’t be drawn to the same spot for a repeat performance!
The crate or the tie down is a great way for you to know where your dog is and what she is doing. Crating or the tie down gives you the chance to get some work done in one room while knowing that the dog isn’t busy destroying something in another room. And, finally, crating or the tie down is a way for you to free your mind about the dog and maybe read a good book . . . like the New Art of Dog Training.
